The Chocolate Moon : Carre Croquant

The Chocolate Moon is another mail order direct deliverly chocolate company, much like Moko chocolates I have reviewed previously, they specialise in delivering a range of different chocolate products beautifully hand-wrapped and boxed to locations all over the UK. I'm always a bit wary of mail order chocolate companies, after my experiences with Moko Chocolates I found that they aren't always too good.

The Chocolate Moon Carre Croqaunt

I decided to go for the Carre Croquants, they sounded like just my type of thing, a chocolate praline that "melts in the mouth, scattered with crunchy hazelnut pieces", it takes quite a bite for a praline to let me down! On receiving them you definately can't say that these aren't presented exquisitely, not only are they packaged  in their own packaging and hand-tied with a ribbon but they are then placed in a wonderful cylinder gift tube, they look the perfect gift for someone.

The Chocolate Moon Carre Croqaunt

On opening the tube you can see that you get 8 substantial sized pralines and oh yum they look extremely tempting, they have a nice nutty aroma and a good thick substantial shell encasing a smooth praline centre, the textures are all there, I liked the nice thick shell, the smoothness of the praline and the crunch added by the hazelnuts but the taste was just far too sweet & commercial for me.

The Chocolate Moon Carre Croqaunt

It infact reminded me of Thorntons Alpini Chocolates, it had that strong icing sugar feel to it, like it had been bulked out with about a kilo of the stuff, and looking at the nutritional information I did find that as well as sugar there had been dextrose added which would explain this. The nutty flavour just seemed to be completely overpowered by this overwhelming burning of sugar and I just wish that some of the more deep nut flavours had been allowed to come through.

The Chocolate Moon Carre Croqaunt

For anyone who loves Thorntons Alpini Chocolates or loves the sweet toothed commercial stuff then this is the perfect gift for them but at £9.95 a shot you are definately paying for the luxury packaging rather than the chocolate I would say, a treat for someone else maybe but not one to buy yourself.

The Chocolate Moon Carre Croqaunt

Taste - 5.8/10 - Was far too sugary & commercial for me, let down by a praline unfortunately.
Texture - 7.2/10 - Texture was good, creamy and rich with a nice crunch added by the hazelnut pieces atop.
Appearance - 8/10 - Packaged beautifully, look like the perfect gift to send someone without a doubt.
Price - 6.3/10 - At £9.75 for these are really expensive for just your run of the mill commercial chocolates, I definately say you are paying for the gift experience with these ones.
Overall - 6.7/10 - Don't particularly deliver on flavour for me but a nice gift for the sweet toothed lovers out there.

  1. Hi there

Sorry to hear that these particular chocolates weren't to your taste. However very pleased to hear you like our presentation and packaging.

I do just want to clarify that the price of the chocolates are actually the price of the chocolates delivered, so please take this into consideration!!

    Kind regards
