I love Hotel Chocolat's concept of their extra thick eggs, instead of scrimping away and providing a flimsy easter shell filled with a couple of measly chocolates they produce the most gorgeously thick shells enough to satisfy any chocolate lover this Easter. They offer quite a few different types of eggs in their Extra Thick Range but I just couldn't resist this You Crack Me Up Egg; perfect for both adults & children alike.
Presented in a sturdy classy box the egg itself consists of 2 shells; one made with their 40% milk chocolate and the other a mellow milk shell with a splash of white chocolate, both wrapped in a wonderful foil wrapping to keep the eggs superbly fresh for full enjoyment. Lurking inside the shells are a range of 10 cute chocolates that peep out from their tissue paper wrapping with their cute smiley faces; despite this egg being widely produced it has such a handmade feel to it and the addition of the chocolates wrapped and sealed with a Hotel Chocolat sticker adds that little extra special touch.
I couldn't resist tucking in to try some of the chocolates inside first, the little faces were just too tempting and the flavours provided sounded like they would be just up my street, with no addition of alcohol in any of these chocolates I was pretty sure there wasn't going to be any that I was going to dislike and oh how I was right. The chocolate selection in this egg is just about perfect for me: Milk Praline Fried Egg, Chocolate Brownie, Smooth Praline, Orange Praline, Caramel Chocolate Bunny,40% Milk Chocolate Chick, Vanilla Buttercream, Crunchy Praline & Strawberry Mousse.
Of course I absolutely loved the praline as usual but some of the more appealing chocolates to me this time round were the addition of the strawberry mousse & the vanilla buttercream; I had tried Hotel Chocolat's strawberry mousse type chocolates when they were coated in white chocolate before but never in their milk chocolate counterpart and all I can say is delicious! This is such a wonderful fluffy fruity chocolate with all the natural tastes of strawberry without a hint of artificialness! The vanilla buttercream was equally as delightful, with strong vanilla notes this creamy indulgent chocolate left me wishing that there was another one of them! This is definately one selection of chocolates that will please any chocolate fan; there is something for everyone & if you are looking for a good Easter Egg for your child this season you can bet that these chocolates will hit the spot with their gorgeous flavours and cute smiley presentation!
On moving onto the shells of the egg I was excited to see just exactly how thick these shells would be, on unwrapping you can see just how thick the edges are and certainly would provide a satisfying bite; however this thickness does not run all the way throughout the egg and the middle itself is a lot thinner than I expected.
Nevertheless these eggs are still a lot thicker than others you may see on the market this Easter and certainly of a better quality. Unfortunately my milk egg shell had smashed slightly in the post but I still tried to piece it together for photo purposes!
The 40% milk chocolate is of course delicious; it's not overly sweet and provides wonderful deep cocoa flavours with a gorgeous long melt, whether you are one to enjoy your chocolate slowly and savour the flavours or whether you are one to dunk a huge chunk of it into a cup of tea, either way this is definately a chocolate for anyone with its superb creamy texture & taste.
Now normally I wouldn't go for an Easter Egg containing white chocolate but the other shell actually intrigued me "a mellow milk chocolate with a splash of white chocolate" this implied that the white chocolate would be present but not too overpowering, and this is exactly how it was. I suprisingly really enjoyed this shell, the white chocolate added a nice dash of sweetness to it, but not so much that it was sickly; it balanced perfectly with the more mellow milk chocolate and provided a wonderful creamy thick substantial chocolate experience, children & adults with a bit more of a sweet tooth will go absolutely crazy for this!
This egg certainly was a winner for me, being a lover of anything cute & chocolatey the egg had me before I even tasted it, and once it had been eaten my feelings were just reinforced, with the lack of alcohol in the chocolates and the creaminess of the egg shells it felt just about perfect. I maybe would have preferred a slightly more thicker egg shell other than around the edges but maybe thats just me being greedy; however I have no doubt that your child's face would mirror that of those of the smiley eggs if they were to wake up to this egg on Easter morning!
Taste - 8.8/10 - The selection of chocolates were delightful, whilst the chocolate shells provided a nice contrast with a deeper milk chocolate & a sweeter milk chocolate with a splash of white.
Texture - 7.3/10 - An extremely creamy chocolate with a good strong melt, would have liked maybe a slightly thicker centre of shell.
Appearance - 9.4/10 - Love how this was presented, in a beautiful box, good foil wrapping, tissue paper, cute smiley faces, perfect!
Price - 6.9/10 - At £24 for an Easter Egg it may be a bit pricey for some people and doesn't offer as good value for money as the Thornton's Jubilee egg, but I do prefer the selection of chocolates and the quality of chocolate in this.
Overall - 8.1/10 - A perfect fun, cute, tasty egg for your child this Easter if you want to treat them to something a bit more special.
