Curiously Wicked Caramelised Hazelnut Prevarications

There's nothing more I like than reviewing a local chocolatier, especially when they're a good one, so it was a great pleasure of mine to pick up these Caramelised Hazelnut Prevarications Chocolates from a chocolatier called Curiously Wicked, based in New Hartley in Tyne & Wear they produce a range of completely innovative chocolate products using Belgian, Madagascan & Venezuelan chocolate and operate a strict no-added sugar policy on many of their products, I was certainly excited to see what these would be like.

The Caramelised Hazelnut Chocolates I decided to try are part of their new "prevarications" range and are neither a piece of chocolate nor a pure ganache lingering somewhere in the middle between the two, interesting. The chocolates come packaged in a clear sellophane bag and have a wonderful hand-made feel to them and certainly don't look mass produced or overly commercialised, the bag consisted of about 5-6 large substantial looking milk chocolates & I couldn't wait to dig into them.

On biting into them you can really understand what they are trying to achieve with the texture, it is absolutely divine; it is not as solid as pure chocolate but not as smooth and sumptuous as a ganache, it is more a truffely like texture and really hit the spot for me. It's not only rich and decadent but melts in the mouth perfectly with the wonderful smoothness contrasting superbly with the crunchy caramelised hazelnut nibs scattered throughout the dense filling. This is certainly a satisfying chocolate with its large exterior and rich centre it will definately satisfy any chocolate craving; however it is also extremely moreish & you could easily find yourself reaching into the bag for another one!!

It wasn't only the texture however that was excellent with this chocolate, the taste also impressed me, often chocolates like this are overly sweet & have no real taste other than that of sugar, this is completely different, it is not sickly or taste bud burning but actually quite a light milk chocolate with subtle pleasant flavours that reminded me of a light chocolate ice cream/.frozen yoghurt in chocolate form with the caramelised hazelnuts adding a nice sweet nutty counterpart! Sometimes subtle chocolates can come off bland but Curiously Wicked obviously know how to work their chocolates with this chocolate taking you just to the edge of enjoyment and teasing you slightly with the taste they offer just tempting you to try another.

It's so great to find a great local chocolatier like this and I wish them all the best, they bring something completely different to the North East Chocolate scene and hope that they'll be producing more excellent chocolates like this soon!

Taste - 8/10 - Subtle but not bland, tempting you with the flavours they offer with the caramelised hazelnuts adding a nice nutty edge.
Texture - 8.7/10 - The texture was decadent, so rich & dense and offered something different to your usual chocolate.
Apperance - 7.6/10 - These aren't the prettiest chocolates I've seen but they give a wonderful handmade finished and are certainly substantial in terms of the size of them.
Price - 7/10 - These are priced at £3.95 for a bag so may not be something you would buy for a quick sugar fix but then this isn't what these chocolates are supposed to be & are perfect for a nice little treat.
Overall - 8/10 - A delight to eat from Curiously Wicked, a chocolate thoroughly enjoyed.

  1. There's a reason Ferrero Rocher's are individually wrapped. Any chocolate/hazelnut combo is likely to result in me eating the whole bag.
