Hotel Chocolat Alternative Mince Pies

This Christmas it's nice to see that Hotel Chocolat have brought out a range of new products to tempt us with; these Alternative Mince Pies are one of them. After hearing about these my initial thought would be that they would be crammed full of spices and fruit; but just encased in a chocolate shell..a sort of Alternative Chocolate Mince Pie if you will.

However this isn't the case whatsoever; infact the only thing that is really "mince pie-esque" about these chocolates is the design, as each one of these is filled with a thick sumptuous salted caramel and topped with a layer of either milk praline or dark praline before being encased in a lovely chocolate cup and adorned with a star.

Despite these chocolates not really having all that to do with Mince Pies I can't deny that these were delicious, the salted caramel is so smooth and sumptuous and a lot thicker than the usual liquid caramel hat Hotel Chocolat is known for, whilst the slight added tang of salt gives a more adult flavour to each of these chocolate. As usual the praline topping is superb, with the milk one adding a nice sweet nutty edge whilst the dark one provides a nice contrast to the sweet caramel below.

One thing that I really have to point out with these Mince Pies is how superb I found the texture of each element; the milk chocolate cups aren't too thick, the caramel is the perfect consistency where it is thick enough that it doesn't run all over the place whilst you are trying to eat it and the praline topping just gives away wonderfully to melt in the mouth!

So how much are these I hear you ask? Well unfortunately this may be the only problem for this product, as these are priced at £7.50 for only 6 Mince Pies, this works out at £1.25 per pie and is quite an expensive stocking filler or after dinner treat. Especially as people are watching their money this may prove to be a bit too much to spend. If you're planning to go all out this Christmas however and are going to worry about the cost later then I certainly would recommend these as in terms of flavour these are divine!

Taste - 7.4/10 - Hotel Chocolat again hasn't let me down in terms of flavour, a delicious salted caramel that pairs wonderfully with the rich sumptuous milk or dark praline.
Texture - 8.9/10 - The texture of these is superb, the caramel is just thick enough and the praline gives way excellently.
Appearance - 9.3/10 - Hotel Chocolat seem to have put a lot of thought into the presentation of their Christmas products these year as they look superb.
Price - 5.6/10 - The price at £7.50 seems a little steep and not excellent value for money at £1.25 per mince pie.
Overall - 7.8/10 - A lovely change to a regular mince pie if you can afford it.

A nice different stocking filler or as an after dinner alternative to a regular mince pie.

You can pick these up at any Hotel Chocolat store or online at

  1. these look yummy...

...its a good job that I am nowhere near a Hotel Chocolat now ;o)

  2. the inner caramel looks so good, at least the price might be able to keep me from taking down the box in one go...maybe

  3. Aww, these look all quaint and festive and delicious, but yipes at the price. I guess good thing I'm nowhere near a Hotel Chocolat right now either!

  4. Oh boy.

Have got to dig my teeth into one of these, when they arrive. Ha.

On the price though; they sell for 1.95 pound per piece, if you buy them individually from the store.
