Chuao Chocolatier CoCo Bar

I love the range of bars that Venezuelan U.S. based chocolate company Chuao produce, a bit like Vosges, they produce a range of numerous different high quality artisan chocolate bars with various additions incorporated to pair with their premium chocolate. However; it's pretty hard to get my hands on any of them in the U.K., so this was another bar that just had to be brought home from my trip to New York!

Chuao Chocolatier Coco Bar

The CoCo bar consists of 60% dark chocolate, coconut, almonds, cinnamon & coriander, a sort of tropical spice bar, if you will; although on tasting the bar I have to say that I found that the 60% dark chocolate is more of a deep milk in terms of flavour than that of a deep robust dark chocolate. It is quite sweet and creamy never treading to far into the "bitterness" so often associated with higher percentage chocolates; but it pairs perfectly with the mix-ins of the bar.

In terms of aroma this smells just like your classic Bounty Bar or in the States..I guess it would be a Mounds bar, strong coconut and chocolate scents waft around your nostrils, but don't worry, this is a hell of a lot better than your typical Bounty that always seems to be left at the bottom of the chocolate Celebrations box!

Both the taste and texture contrast work ideally; the sweet almost creamy coconut pairs delicately with the light flavour of the 60% dark chocolate and the warm almost spicy flavours from the cinnamon & coriander, and of course, not forgetting the almonds that add a wonderful nutty background and a great texture contrast with an additional crunch!

I particularly liked how the coriander and cinnamon weren't too overpowering and were just used as almost a backdrop for the other flavours rather than the main feature; I think quite often herbs and spices can be used excellently in chocolate as long as they don't take too much away from the flavours of the cocoa but complement it instead. I found this to be the case here, where all the flavours entwined to create a delicious chocolate bar.

Taste - 7.3/10 - A lovely spiced sweet creamy chocolate bar; flavours work very well together.
Texture - 7.5/10 - The small almond pieces and the coconut add a nice texture contrast; good to crunch or to let melt slowly!
Appearance - 8.2/10 - I love the design of Chuao's bars, very artistic.
Price - 8/10 - These bars cost around $6, which I think is reasonable.
Overall - 7.8/10 - A subtly spiced delicate bar with nice flavour and texture contrast.
Someone who appreciates finer chocolates and isn't scared to try something a bit different.

I picked my bar up at a Wholefoods, you can also have a look at Chuao's website.
