Nutritious Delicious Truffles

Despite being a complete chocoholic I am also very health conscious; I would go so far as to say that chocolate is my only vice, something that I know I probably couldn't give up, so when I was contacted by Nutritious Delicious and offered to sample some of their "healthy", yes healthy truffles, I knew that I just had to have a nibble!

I think in modern times people are becoming more and more conscious of what they are putting into their bodies; with the emergence of super foods and functional foods products are becoming more orientated to help consumers achieve "optimum health". Chocolate in itself, the good dark kind, not the low cocoa percentage sugar loaded commercial stuff, is actually really good for you, full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals; it has been proven that it is beneficial for health.

Nutritious Delicious Truffles

Nutritious Delicious have taken this on board and have optimised the health benefits of chocolate even further by making their truffles using a range of ingredients that are associated with healthy living : maca powder, lucuma, carob, ginseng, agave nectar, sunflower seeds, coconut butter, almonds and of course the main ingredient cacao! No nasty hydrogenated fats or oil here!

Often people seem to think that when a product is healthy however that if often tastes I was hoping that these would still taste really good! They come in a range of 4 different flavours : Orange, Vanilla, Lime and Almond; despite my bag stating that these were Orange flavoured, inside I infact got a selection of all of them!

They are a good petite size, around the size of a liquid caramel from Hotel Chocolat, perfect for just popping into your mouth for a quick chocolate fix. All of the truffles have a really raw feel about them; some people may hate this but I really enjoyed it, deep cocoa flavours and a wonderful earthiness to them.

The vanilla truffle was probably the most "raw" tasting; with only the subtle flavours of vanilla to work with this chocolate tastes metallic almost but still very pleasant on the palate. The almond variety is similar; but with a slightly nutty edge to it that adds a nice flavour contrast to the background truffle.

However where these truffles really excel is in their fruit flavours : orange and lime. They are so amazingly refreshing and "zingy"; I'm not normally partial to flavour such as lemon/lime in chocolate, I often feel that the citrus tang works against the chocolate. Certainly not here, the lime & orange flavours are so natural tasting and work perfectly against the dark raw flavour of the chocolate that could very well becoming over powering if it wasn't for the lighter tastes of the citrus fruits that help to lift the tone slightly! I just wanted to come back for more and more of these!

The texture of these probably isn't going to be what you're used to if you normally indulge in rich sumptuous truffles from various chocolate shops; these are quite a bit drier and not the usual ganache like filling you may be used to. Nevertheless they are still very pleasant and the fact they have so many other health benefits and still taste good I wouldn't say no!

Taste - 6.4/10
- The vanilla and almond varieties were more earthy tasting; whilst the lime and orange flavours were excellent.
Texture - 6.2/10 - Slightly drier than your usual truffle but still good.
Appearance - 7.1/10 - A good petite size with a nice sheen to them.
Price - 6.7/10 - They are priced at £5.99 for a 130g bag, a decent price for a healthy yummy product!
Overall - 6.6/10 - Exactly what it says on the pack..Nutritious and Delicious!
Definitely for dark chocolate lovers, don't think commercial sweet tooth fans would enjoy these so much.
