In the UK we are only really blessed with one of the many 'Ovomaltine' products that the Swiss created; commonly referred to as 'Ovaltine' over here we really only know of the warming comforting malty/chocolate malty drink that warms us up on a winters night and helps us get a good nights sleep.
However far beyond this there are many other products offered under the 'Ovomaltine' brand and thanks to the guys at Cyber Candy I was lucky enough to try their famous chocolate 'Ovomaltine' bar.
I had absolutely no idea what this bar was going to be like, yes I knew it was going to be malty (obviously) but other than that in terms of texture etc I wasn't too sure what I was going to be getting. Reading the back of the packaging in anticipation it stated that there were some 'hazelnuts' and 'butter fat' involved; this immediately had me thinking that it was going to be a truffle like bar much reminiscent of the European Milka Alpine Milk chocolate bar. How more wrong could I be!
The chocolate bar itself isn't particularly anything to look at; each square is adorned with 'Ovomaltine' writing whilst the cubes itself looked like they had bloomed slightly or were a bit scuffed. This turned out not to be the case as I found out for myself when I snapped off a couple of cubes and found that in fact blended through the chocolate there was little bits of malted milk power + hazelnuts..it kind of even looked like the chocolate had been aerated there were so many of them!
This is definitely not a chocolate bar for letting melt in your mouth, if you try this you will be graced with horrible gritty scratchy like pieces, chew it and bite it and don't waste your time trying to let it slowly melt, it will not be pleasant. Despite this the taste is delicious, it tastes just like 'Ovaltine' that creamy, warming, malty flavour with the malt flavour taking full predominance and the milk chocolate just acting as a nice sweet backdrop. It reminded me very much of Maltesers/ the new Malteser Bar alas without the huge crunchy malt pieces and instead just small flecks that provide the flavour. Delicious.
Not only is it good in terms of flavour but its also got a good amount of vitamins + minerals in the bar, ok so it is not going to be as good as eating a cup of broccoli or popping back a multi vitamin but the malt powder does have a substantial amount of certain elements, especially Phosphor + Magnesium; whilst the calorie count at 514kcal per 100g is a lot lower than you might see in some other chocolate bars.
For a true ultimate malt experience I just may have to eat some of this whilst drinking a mug of Ovaltine...imagine that..yum!
Taste - 8.4/10 - Really good savoury/sweet malty chocolate flavour.
Texture - 5/10 - The texture isn't brilliant if you want a chocolate that you can savour and let melt in your mouth. However if you don't mind munching your way through it its great.
Appearance - 6.3/10 - Nothing particularly special about the bar, but Cyber Candy have provided a good translation of ingredients on the back of the packaging which was helpful!
Price - 6.2/10 - Priced at £4.99 for 100g this isn't cheap but I think it is still worth a try; especially if you love malty chocolates, I know it has a lot of fans out there!
Overall - 6.5/10 - A pleasantly delicious malted milk chocolate bar.
If you're the type that likes to savour chocolate and let it melt slowly on your tongue then this isn't for you. If you like the delicious malty flavour that the likes of Maltesers provide then you will LOVE this chocolate bar.
