When it comes to commercial chocolate bars there's nothing much more satisfying than a Snickers bar; the chewy nougat and caramel mixed with crunchy peanuts layered in milk chocolate, it's a real treat - but what happens when you fancy those kind of flavours but without such a big sugar/sweetness hit and you're looking for more of a quality offering.
Well one of William Curley's Nostalgia range bars definitely hits the spot - peanut and chocolate nougat topped with a salted peanut caramel and coated in Toscano 70% dark chocolate; although it looks smaller than your average Snickers I remember weighing it and the weights actually being relatively similar - plus the fact that it's a lot richer so you don't need as much of it.
The texture is definitely there, you're met with similar rich chewy nougat, chewy soft caramel and gorgeously crunchy peanut pieces. However the flavour here is slightly different; due to the rich dark chocolate coating it takes it to another level adding further depth into the bar whilst the salted caramel sauce helps to take off any excessive sweetness that the nougat may be bringing. Overall it eats deliciously.
Would I use this as a replacement for a Snickers? Probably not as I think you would eat them in two completely different eating occasions; Snickers - you're on the go, you want a big sweet fix and something that you can really get your teeth into. This offering - it's something you want to take home and eat slowly with a warm, hot drink.
Taste - 8.4/10 - Delicious, lovely salty/sweet combo, enhanced by the rich dark chocolate.
Texture - 7.5/10 - Chewy, gooey caramel and nougat with lovely crunchy peanut pieces.
Appearance - 7.7/10 - Lovely artisan look to it.
Price - 6.7/10 - Priced at £3.50 it's around 5 times the price of Snickers but it is a much higher quality offering.
Overall - 7.6/10 - A lovely upmarket take on a Snickers.
WHO FOR?If you're fancying simple flavours done a bit more elegantly then this would definitely hit the spot; especially if you're a dark chocolate lover and don't like your chocolates too sweet.
