This is the final review of the milk chocolate bars from Vanini and I must say I've been extremely impressed with the quality of the bars so far; this one is the standard milk chocolate blend with pieces of orange peel.
Chocolate + orange is a bit of a funny one for me - in all honestly I'm not a huge fan, apart from the nostalgic, sweet, Terry's Chocolate Orange I get at Christmastime I would never normally choose a chocolate orange combination. I think there's a fine line between sickly/artificial and too sharp/acidic. Due to the there only being orange peel pieces throughout the bar, rather than the bar being flavoured with orange I hoped that this would produce a well balanced eat.
As per the other two bars this chocolate bar was exquisitely packaged in the usual card sleeve, foil wrap and cocoa bean embellishment on each square. The snap of the chocolate was crisp and clean and provided a rich, luxurious melt on eating with it's high cocoa butter content and 49% cocoa solids.
The flavour of the bar is actually really good; the milk chocolate provides a wonderful creamy, milk chocolate backdrop with light notes of caramel that is pleasantly cut through when you hit a piece of orange peel. These inject a light fruitiness and acidity to the bar, that complement the overall flavour rather than detract from it and produce a light, pleasant eat with a great balance between sweet milk chocolate and fruity citrus.
On eating you can still enjoy the thick melt of the chocolate with the orange peel imparting citrus notes, until all you are left with are small, slightly chewy pieces of orange peel left; normally I would find this a nuisance but they due to their small size and soft texture they do not impede the overall texture of the bar.
You can see the pieces of orange peel dotted through the bar and there is a good distribution throughout with there not being too few such that it loses its flavour as an orange chocolate bar but not so many that it ruins the eat/texture.
Personally I would describe it as eating the best quality Terry's Chocolate Orange you could think of , and I mean that with the greatest respect, it's sweet and light enough to please the masses but also of a superior enough quality to delight chocolate connoisseurs
