Anyone who reads this blog regularly will know that I am a huge lover of all things praline/gianduja, so I was really interested to give these new minigianduiotto a go from Discover; I reviewed some of their chocolate bars last year, with no added sugar and sweetened with stevia I was thoroughly impressed with how good they were.
What with the trend for natural sweeteners and consumers looking for alternatives to processed sugar to me it's always a question of can the alternatives live up to expectations on taste. These minigianduiotto are sweetened with stevia + malitol.
The size of them is perfect and the fact they are individually wrapped makes it easier to not be tempted to eat the whole bag! Unwrapping one and slicing through the texture is exactly what you would expect, smooth, rich and creamy. Popping one into your mouth the melt is equally as good, luxurious and delicious.
There was something slightly different about the taste compared to similar sugar based products I've tried; but this certainly wasn't a negative. The hazelnut flavour came through beautifully and despite sweeteners normally providing a sweeter hit compared to sugar, I actually found these to be darker with a stronger back note of cocoa. I may have liked them slightly sweeter, but that's probably just personal preference and my liking for creamier/sweeter chocolates as opposed to deeper/darker/robust flavours.
Thankfully however there is no hint of that classic aniseed stevia flavour that quite often comes through and if tasted side by side with a minigianduiotto produced with sugar I doubt many people would pick up that this variety was produced with sweetener, which is ultimately the sign of a great product. I can highly recommend these to anyone looking to cut down on their sugar consumption but still wants a sweet treat - the nutritionals weren't contained on the pack but I would be really interested to see the nutritionals on this product compared to standard to see how they stack up.
Taste - 8.7/10 - Executed extremely well; love gianduja/gianduiotto and pleased these lived up to expectations. Personal taste would have probably preferred them a bit sweeter but am sure these will be perfect for other palettes.
Texture - 9.4/10 - Smooth, rich and luxurious.
Appearance - 8.6/10 - Great size, look elegant in pack and great that they are individually wrapped.
Price - 9.5/10 - Priced at £3.99 for a 100g bag, 30% Piedmont hazelnuts and alternative with sweetener base they are an absolute bargain. I would expect to pay much more for these.
Overall - 9.0/10 - A great alternative product for those looking for ways to reduce their sugar intake.
Anyone who loves gianduja will adore these as the sweetener base isn't obvious. Anyone looking to reduce their sugar intake.
