I've already reviewed 3 of the other M&S Spirit of Summer chocolate bars, this was the last one out of the range that interested me - a single origin Colombian milk chocolate bar that is blended with cane panela sugar, a traditional unrefined South American sugar that is made from the boiling and evaporation of sugarcane juice.
Typically it is meant to possess a much deeper, richer, full bodied flavour, somewhat similar to molasses and I therefore hoped that it would help bring an extra flavour dimension to the chocolate bar. In addition to this the bar contains 37% cocoa solids and therefore should be a richer milk chocolate eat anyway.
Similar to the other bars this chocolate bar is only 45g and is a thinner, longer bar, meaning that each piece you break off is quite thin, I do find that this makes the bar last a longer period of time as it makes me feel satisfied with less. The chocolate has a clean, crisp snap and melts smoothly and easily in mouth.
Comparing it to standard milk chocolates I've tried I definitely did notice a much more robust flavour to it. It is creamy but definitely doesn't have that same refined sweetness to it that you may have experienced with other chocolate bars. Instead it has an almost treacle undertone to it with richer caramelised notes.
I do like the point of difference using cane panela sugar and it is very fitting for the Spirit of Summer brand and is a good option for those looking for a good quality milk chocolate that isn't overly sweet.
